What Is a Type 2 EV Charger?

Type 2 (IEC 62196-2), also called a Mennekes connector, is the standard AC charging plug used across Australia and Europe. It's a 7-pin round connector that handles both single-phase (up to 7.4kW) and three-phase (up to 22kW) charging — and it's fitted to almost every EV sold new in Australia, including Tesla, which uses a proprietary plug in North America but Type 2 here.
Not a Type 2 connector

3-pin Powerpoint

2.4kW
~10–12 km range per hour

A standard 10A household socket — not a dedicated EV connector at all, and not designed for the sustained load of regular EV charging.

Type 2 · single-phase

7.4 kW Type 2 Charger

7.4kW
~40–50 km range per hour

The practical standard for most Melbourne homes. Single-phase, fits every new EV's Type 2 inlet, fully charges most batteries overnight.

Most popular
Type 2 · three-phase

22 kW Three-Phase Charger

22kW
~120–140 km range per hour

Same Type 2 connector, wired for three-phase power. Requires three-phase supply at your switchboard and an EV whose onboard charger accepts 3-phase AC.

3-phase homes only
Connector standards explained

Type 2 vs Type 1, CCS2 & NACS

A lot of confusion online comes from mixing up regional standards. Here's how Type 2 fits into the bigger picture.

Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) — AC, Australia's standard

The 7-pin plug used for home and destination AC charging in Australia and Europe. Handles single or three-phase power up to 22kW. This is what's fitted to your home wallbox.

CCS2 — DC fast charging, same inlet

CCS2 adds two large DC pins beneath the Type 2 plug. Your car's single charging inlet handles both: the Type 2 section for home AC charging, the CCS2 pins for public DC fast charging.

Type 1 & NACS — not used in Australia

Type 1 is North America and Japan's older AC standard; NACS is Tesla's connector, now standard across North America. Neither appears on Australian-delivered vehicles — every EV sold here uses Type 2 and CCS2.

Tesla in Australia uses Type 2 too

Unlike North America, Australian-delivered Teslas use the standard Type 2 connector for AC charging, not Tesla's proprietary US plug — so a standard Type 2 home charger works without an adapter.

Tethered vs socketed

Tethered chargers have a cable permanently attached — plug straight in. Socketed units have a Type 2 socket and need your own cable. Most home installs use tethered for convenience.

Works away from home too

Type 2 is also the standard at Melbourne shopping centres, workplaces and destination chargers — many are socketed, so a spare Type 2-to-Type 2 cable in the car is worth carrying.

The smartest way to charge

Charge Your EV From Solar — For Free

Every kWh your solar panels generate that you don't use in the house can go straight into your car. With the right charger and setup, your daily commute can cost you nothing.

A typical 10kW solar system generates more than enough surplus on a sunny Melbourne day to fully charge a 60–77 kWh EV battery. Pair with a home battery to store overnight for early morning top-ups.

Add Solar to Your Quote
Zappi Eco Mode

Solar first, grid backup

Charges from excess solar generation and draws from the grid to maintain minimum charge speed. Never stops charging.

Zappi Eco+ Mode

Solar only — 100% free charging

Charges only when your panels are generating enough surplus. Waits patiently — then charges your EV for free.

EV Charger Rebates in Victoria — The Honest Answer

There's a lot of outdated information online about EV charger rebates. Here's the accurate picture for 2026.

Victorian Residential EV Rebate

The state government's residential EV charger subsidy ended in June 2023 and has not been renewed. There is currently no active Victorian residential EV charger rebate for homeowners in 2026.

Not available — ended June 2023

Federal DRIVEN Rebate (Business)

The federal government's DRIVEN program provides up to $3,000 per plug for eligible businesses installing EV chargers. Available to Australian businesses, strata, and councils — not individual homeowners.

Available for businesses

Novated Lease / FBT Exemption

EVs purchased via a novated lease are exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax — and charger installation costs can often be bundled into the lease, making the charger effectively pre-tax.

Available — talk to your employer

Charge From Solar — Zero Fuel Cost

The biggest ongoing saving isn't a rebate — it's pairing your charger with solar. Charging from excess solar generation costs nothing and can save the equivalent of thousands of dollars per year in fuel.

Available — ask us how
Rebate landscape changes. If you're installing a charger for business purposes, ask us about the DRIVEN program — Supply Solar will confirm eligibility and assist with the application as part of your commercial install.

Amy C.Berwick · Type 2 Tesla Wall Connector, 3-phase

"Got a Wallbox Pulsar Plus, tethered Type 2 cable so no fumbling with a loose cable every night. The team suggested it over more expensive options — suited our single-phase home perfectly."

Type 2 EV Charger FAQs

What is a Type 2 EV charger?
Type 2 (IEC 62196-2), also called a Mennekes connector, is the standard AC charging connector used in Australia, Europe and most markets outside North America. It's a 7-pin round plug supporting both single-phase (up to 7.4kW) and three-phase (up to 22kW) charging, fitted to almost every new EV sold in Australia since around 2019. Get your free quote →
Do all EVs in Australia use a Type 2 connector?
Almost all. Every EV sold new in Australia since roughly 2019 — Tesla, BYD, Hyundai, Kia, MG, Polestar, Volkswagen and more — uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging. The main exceptions are some older imported vehicles, such as early Nissan Leaf models, which may use a Type 1 connector and require an adapter.
What is the difference between Type 2 and CCS2?
Type 2 is the AC connector, used for home and destination charging. CCS2 (Combined Charging System 2) extends the Type 2 plug by adding two large DC pins below it, enabling DC fast charging at public stations. Almost every EV in Australia has a single inlet supporting both — the Type 2 upper section for AC home charging, and the CCS2 pins for DC fast charging.
Does Tesla use Type 2 in Australia?
Yes. Unlike North America, where Tesla uses its proprietary NACS connector, Australian-delivered Tesla vehicles use the standard Type 2 connector for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging — the same as every other EV brand sold here. A standard Type 2 home charger works with Tesla vehicles in Australia without an adapter.
What is the difference between a socket and a tethered Type 2 charger?
A tethered charger has a cable permanently attached to the wall unit — pull it out and plug in. A socketed charger has a Type 2 socket on the unit and requires you to carry and connect your own Type 2 cable. Most home installations use a tethered charger for convenience; a socketed unit is sometimes chosen for shared or commercial installations.
What is the difference between 7.4kW and 22kW Type 2 charging?
A 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 charger adds roughly 40–50km of range per hour — the practical standard for most Melbourne homes, which have single-phase power. A 22kW three-phase Type 2 charger adds roughly 120–140km per hour but requires three-phase power at the property and an EV whose onboard charger accepts three-phase AC — not all EVs do. We confirm your home's setup during a free assessment.
Can a Type 2 charger be used for public charging too?
Yes. Type 2 is also the standard connector at Australian workplace and destination AC chargers — shopping centres, car parks and similar locations. Many public Type 2 points are socketed rather than tethered, so it's worth carrying a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable in the car for these locations.
