What Does a Home Battery Actually Do?

A home battery stores the solar energy your panels generate during the day so you can use it in the evening and overnight — instead of selling it back to the grid for a low feed-in tariff. It can also keep your home running during a blackout, and in some cases charge from the grid overnight at off-peak rates to reduce your bills further.

Use your own power at night

Most solar is generated between 10am and 3pm — when most households aren't home. A battery stores that energy for when you actually need it: evenings, mornings, and overnight.

Stay on during blackouts

When the grid goes down, a battery-equipped home can keep running automatically — lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, and medical equipment — for hours or through the night, depending on capacity.

Cut your bills further

With time-of-use tariffs, charging a battery overnight at off-peak rates (and discharging at peak) can shave your grid costs even on days with little sun. Every kWh you make and store is one less you buy.

Cheaper Home Batteries Program (Federal)

The Australian Government's battery rebate, launched 1 July 2025, provides a subsidy on eligible home battery installations — significantly reducing the installed cost for qualifying households. Supply Solar assesses your eligibility and applies the rebate directly to your installation.

What Melbourne Homeowners Say

"Had a GoodWe ESA retrofitted to our existing 10kW system. Supply Solar checked inverter compatibility first — the AC-coupled design meant we kept our current inverter. Install was clean and the battery went live the same day."

SB
Sarah B.Frankston · Powerwall 3 retrofit

"Went with the Sungrow SBH as we already had a Sungrow inverter. The team explained everything — including the federal rebate — and the quote matched the final bill exactly. No nasty surprises."

RM
Robert M.Berwick · Sungrow SBH battery

"We did 13kW solar plus a Sigenergy SigenStor battery as a package — and we're planning to add their EV charger next. Supply Solar handled both rebates and sorted the grid approval. Our evening usage is now almost entirely from the battery. Very happy."

Home Battery Storage FAQs

How much does a home battery cost in Melbourne?
The cost depends on the battery brand, capacity, whether your existing inverter is compatible, and which rebates you qualify for. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program reduces the installed cost for eligible households — and Supply Solar applies it directly so you don't need to claim separately. Get your free quote →
Is a home battery worth it in 2026?
For most Melbourne homes with solar, yes — especially in 2026. Evening electricity rates continue to rise, and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has significantly reduced the upfront cost. A battery shifts your solar generation into the hours you actually use power (evenings and mornings), cutting grid imports substantially. Homes with EVs or high evening usage see the fastest payback. Supply Solar can show you an indicative return based on your actual bill and solar output.
What size battery do I need for my home?
The right battery size depends on your evening and overnight energy use — the power you can't cover with solar during the day. As a starting guide: a 5–8 kWh battery suits smaller homes with modest evening use (one GoodWe ESA or Sigenergy module); 10–16 kWh covers most family homes (two modules); 20kWh+ is suited to large or all-electric homes, or homes with an EV. GoodWe ESA and Sigenergy SigenStor are both fully modular, so Supply Solar sizes your battery from your actual usage data and you can expand it later.
Is a GoodWe ESA or Sigenergy battery worth it in Australia?
For most Melbourne homes with solar, yes. The GoodWe ESA is an AC-coupled, all-in-one battery that adds to any existing solar inverter without replacing it — ideal for retrofits. Sigenergy SigenStor combines inverter, battery and EV fast-charging in one modular system — ideal for new installs or homes wanting EV charging built in. Both are top sellers for Supply Solar customers and the federal battery rebate reduces the upfront cost for eligible households.
What is the best home battery for solar in Australia in 2026?
There's no single "best" — it depends on your home. GoodWe ESA for adding a battery to an existing solar system without touching your current inverter. Sigenergy SigenStor for an all-in-one system with built-in EV fast-charging. Sungrow SBH for modular flexibility and compatibility with existing Sungrow systems. Supply Solar installs all three and will recommend the right one for your usage and existing setup.
Do I need solar panels to get a home battery?
No. A battery can be installed without solar and will charge from the grid overnight at off-peak rates. However, pairing a battery with solar is where the savings stack up — your panels charge the battery for free during the day. Most of our customers install battery and solar together as a package.
What is the federal battery rebate in Australia?
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program launched 1 July 2025 and provides a federal subsidy on eligible home battery installations, significantly reducing the installed cost for qualifying Australian households. Supply Solar checks your eligibility and lodges the rebate as part of your installation — you don't need to do anything separately.
Can a home battery keep my house running during a blackout?
Yes — if installed with backup capability. GoodWe ESA and Sigenergy SigenStor both support whole-home backup with the appropriate gateway hardware — Sigenergy's switchover is near-instant. Sungrow systems can also be configured for backup. We design your installation to include backup if that's a priority, and walk you through what loads it can support for how long.
How long does a home battery last?
Quality home batteries carry a 10-year warranty and are typically rated for 4,000+ charge cycles — that's 10+ years of daily cycling before capacity drops significantly. GoodWe, Sigenergy, and Sungrow all offer 10-year product warranties on their residential battery systems.
