How It Works

What Does a Commercial Battery Actually Do?

A battery energy storage system (BESS) does three things that directly reduce what your business pays for electricity.

Cuts peak demand charges

Peak demand charges are billed based on your highest 30-minute power draw during peak periods — often 30–50% of a commercial electricity bill. A battery discharges during those windows, flattening your peak and reducing the demand component directly.

Stores solar for overnight use

If you have commercial solar, most generation happens during business hours when you may already be importing less from the grid. A battery captures the excess and shifts it to evening operations, overnight security systems, or early-morning startup loads.

Keeps critical operations running

A battery configured for backup power automatically switches your critical loads — servers, refrigeration, production lines — to battery supply during grid outages, without manual intervention and without waiting for a generator to start.

Why Demand Charges Matter

Your electricity retailer watches your highest 30-minute power draw each billing period — and charges you for that peak for the entire month. One busy afternoon can inflate your demand bill for 30 days.

Demand charges = 30–50% of commercial bills

For most medium-to-large commercial sites, the demand component rivals or exceeds the energy component. It is the single most impactful line item a battery can address.

Battery discharges before your peak hits

The battery management system monitors your site's power draw in real time and pre-empts demand spikes by discharging before your highest-draw equipment fires up simultaneously.

Savings appear on the very next bill

Unlike solar payback which builds over months, demand charge reduction typically shows up in the first full billing cycle after installation — making the savings immediately visible.

Applications

Commercial Battery Storage for Every Business Type

The right battery application depends on your business's energy pattern, existing solar, and operational priorities.

Small Business & Retail

Cut demand charges from afternoon air conditioning and equipment peaks. A battery paired with existing solar covers evening trading hours without grid imports.

Peak shaving · Solar shift

Industrial & Manufacturing

Large motor start-up events create extreme demand spikes. A BESS absorbs those peaks and can be sized to support a 100kW+ solar system with overnight production loads.

Demand management · Large-scale BESS

Strata & Mixed-Use

Common-area lighting, lifts, and EV charging create measurable demand charges. A shared battery reduces building-wide grid dependency and benefits all owners.

Common area savings · EV integration

Medical & Cold Chain

Power reliability is non-negotiable. A battery configured for backup keeps refrigeration, servers, and life-safety systems running through outages without relying on a generator.

Backup power · Critical loads

Warehouse & Logistics

Forklift charging, loading dock equipment, and shift changes create predictable demand peaks. A battery sized around your interval data targets exactly those windows.

Load shifting · Fleet charging

Government & Education

Budget certainty matters. A commercial battery delivers predictable, forecastable energy savings against known demand rate schedules — ideal for organisations with long planning horizons.

Demand certainty · VEU eligible

Incentives & Savings

Commercial Battery Incentives in Victoria

Commercial battery storage qualifies for different incentives than residential systems. Here is what applies to your business in 2026.

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

The VEU program provides financial incentives for eligible energy efficiency upgrades, which may include commercial battery systems depending on the application and site type. Supply Solar identifies VEU eligibility as part of your commercial assessment.

STCs for Solar Under 100kW

If your battery installation includes a new solar system under 100kW, Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) reduce the upfront cost of the solar component at point of sale. Supply Solar applies STCs directly to your invoice.

LGCs for Systems Over 100kW

Solar systems above 100kW generate Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) based on actual energy produced over time. These can be sold to electricity retailers, creating an ongoing revenue stream that contributes to your system's payback.

Tax Depreciation & Instant Asset Write-Off

Commercial battery and solar assets may qualify for accelerated depreciation or instant asset write-off under current ATO provisions, improving the after-tax economics of your project. Speak with your accountant alongside your Supply Solar proposal.

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to residential installations only and does not cover commercial systems. Supply Solar identifies every applicable commercial incentive during your site assessment — including schemes that are not widely advertised.

FAQ

Commercial Battery Storage — Common Questions

Is commercial battery storage worth it for a Melbourne business?
For most businesses with solar or high peak demand charges, yes. Commercial batteries reduce peak demand charges — often one of the largest items on a business electricity bill — by discharging during peak rate periods. When paired with a solar system, a battery also stores excess generation for overnight use, cutting grid imports significantly. Supply Solar provides a detailed assessment of your bill and site before recommending a system so you can see the projected savings before committing.
What is the difference between STCs and LGCs?
STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates) apply to solar systems under 100kW and are an upfront, point-of-sale discount. LGCs (Large-scale Generation Certificates) apply to systems over 100kW and are earned over time based on actual electricity generation. Batteries themselves do not generate STCs or LGCs, but may be eligible for VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) incentives. Supply Solar explains which incentives apply to your specific configuration during the assessment stage.
Can a commercial battery reduce my peak demand charges?
Yes. Peak demand charges are billed based on your highest 30-minute power draw during peak periods — often making up 30–50% of a commercial electricity bill. A battery system programmed to discharge during those windows flattens your demand profile, directly reducing the demand component. This is called peak shaving, and it can produce substantial savings even without solar.
What size battery does a business need?
Commercial battery sizing depends on your overnight energy use, peak demand profile, solar system size, and whether backup capability is required. Supply Solar conducts a full energy audit — analysing your actual interval data — before recommending a system. C&I batteries typically range from 30kWh to several hundred kWh depending on the application and business type.
Can a commercial battery provide backup power during outages?
Yes. Commercial battery systems can be configured for backup power during grid outages, protecting critical equipment and operations. The level of backup coverage depends on system capacity and which loads are prioritised. Supply Solar designs backup configurations to match your critical load requirements — whether that is refrigeration, servers, production lines, or life-safety systems.
What is a BESS?
BESS stands for Battery Energy Storage System. It is the commercial and industrial term for a battery installation that stores electrical energy for later use — managing demand charges, storing solar generation, or providing backup power. BESS systems range from tens of kWh for small commercial sites to multiple MWh for industrial or grid-scale applications.
Are there rebates for commercial battery storage in Victoria 2026?
Commercial batteries may be eligible for Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) incentives depending on the application and site type. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to residential installations only and does not cover commercial systems. Businesses can also access tax depreciation benefits on eligible energy assets. Supply Solar identifies every applicable incentive for your specific project during the assessment stage.
How much does commercial battery storage cost in Australia?
Commercial battery storage cost depends on the system capacity (kWh), the battery chemistry, whether a new inverter or switchboard work is required, and your site's grid connection. Because every commercial site is different, Supply Solar provides a free, no-obligation assessment with a detailed proposal tailored to your business — contact us to arrange a site visit.
