What Is the Tesla Powerwall 3?

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is an all-in-one home battery with a built-in solar inverter, storing 13.5kWh of usable energy and delivering up to 11.5kW of continuous power. Unlike older batteries that need a separate inverter, the Powerwall 3 combines solar conversion and storage in a single unit — and it's rated to run power-hungry loads like ducted air-conditioning and EV charging simultaneously, even during a blackout.

Built-in inverter, one unit

No separate hybrid inverter to buy or wire in. The Powerwall 3 accepts up to 20kW DC of solar directly across 3 MPPTs, simplifying new installs and cutting a cost most other batteries still carry.

Power for big appliances

11.5kW of continuous output — more than double most competing batteries — means ducted air-con, an EV charger and the rest of the house can run together without tripping.

Whole-home backup, managed by app

With a Tesla Backup Gateway, the Powerwall 3 islands your home automatically during an outage. Monitor generation, usage and backup reserve live from the Tesla app.

What Melbourne Homeowners Say

"Had a Powerwall 3 retrofitted to our existing 10kW system. Supply Solar checked our old inverter first and explained the built-in inverter meant it could be replaced entirely — one clean unit. Install was tidy and it was live the same day."

SB
Sarah B.Frankston · Powerwall 3 retrofit

"We wanted enough power to run ducted air-con and charge the car at the same time without tripping anything. The Powerwall's 11.5kW output does exactly that. Supply Solar explained the federal rebate clearly and the quote matched the final bill."

RM
Robert M.Berwick · Powerwall 3 new install

"We did new solar plus a Powerwall 3 as a package — one unit for solar conversion and storage instead of a separate inverter and battery. Supply Solar handled both rebates and the grid approval. Our evening usage is now almost entirely from the battery."

Tesla Powerwall 3 FAQs

How much does a Tesla Powerwall 3 cost in Melbourne?
The installed cost depends on whether you already have solar, your existing switchboard, and whether you need a Tesla Backup Gateway for whole-home backup. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides a subsidy on eligible installations, calculated per usable kWh, which reduces the net cost. Get your free quote → with your rebate eligibility confirmed upfront.
Is the Tesla Powerwall 3 worth it in 2026?
For Melbourne homes wanting a single, all-in-one system with a built-in inverter and strong power output, yes. The Powerwall 3's 11.5kW continuous output comfortably handles ducted air-conditioning, EV charging and multiple large appliances at once. The federal battery rebate has meaningfully reduced the upfront cost in 2026. Homes that already have a compatible inverter, or want to add capacity in smaller increments, may find a modular battery like GoodWe ESA or Sigenergy a better fit — we'll recommend honestly based on your setup.
Does the Tesla Powerwall 3 need a separate solar inverter?
No. The Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built into the unit, accepting up to 20kW DC of solar across 3 MPPTs. This removes a separate inverter cost on new installs. For retrofits onto existing solar, Supply Solar checks whether your current setup suits the Powerwall 3's integrated design or whether an AC-coupled battery like GoodWe ESA is the simpler fit.
Can the Tesla Powerwall 3 be installed on a three-phase home?
The Powerwall 3 is a single-phase (230VAC) system. Most Melbourne homes are single-phase and it installs without issue. For three-phase homes wanting a Tesla-equivalent all-in-one system, we recommend Sigenergy SigenStor, which supports both single and three-phase configurations.
How long does a Tesla Powerwall 3 last?
The Powerwall 3 carries a 10-year warranty with unlimited charge cycles and a guaranteed minimum of 70% capacity retention at the end of that period. In practice, most owners see well over a decade of useful life before capacity noticeably declines.
Can a Tesla Powerwall 3 keep my home running during a blackout?
Yes. Installed with a Tesla Backup Gateway, the Powerwall 3 is grid-forming and islands your home automatically during an outage, supplying up to 11.5kW continuously — enough for ducted air-conditioning, the fridge, lighting and most household circuits simultaneously.
What is the difference between Tesla Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3?
Both store 13.5kWh usable energy, but the Powerwall 3 adds a built-in solar inverter (no separate inverter needed), a much higher continuous power output (11.5kW vs 5kW), and improved backup performance for large loads. The Powerwall 2 has been superseded by the Powerwall 3 for new Australian installations.
Is the Tesla Powerwall 3 eligible for the federal battery rebate?
Yes. The Powerwall 3 is on the Clean Energy Council's approved battery list and eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which requires VPP (Virtual Power Plant) compatibility — a feature the Powerwall 3 supports. Supply Solar checks your eligibility and applies the rebate directly to your quote.
